Traffic Study Needed for Housing Plan

The Planning and Zoning Commission met in Town Hall on Tuesday night for what turned out to be a very short special meeting. The only item on the agenda was a public hearing on the affordable housing application by Christopher and Margaret Stefanoni to build developments on Hoyt Street. The meeting was adjourned after about 10 minutes, when the commission decided it needed a study of the development's impact of traffic on the area.

Commission Chairman Fred Conze asked for a motion to continue the meeting Nov. 23, after the Stefanonis submit a traffic study by Nov. 16. The motion passed unanimously.

In a statement released Wednesday, Chris Stefanoni said, "Some people are complaining that my senior affordable housing developments are located in quiet residential areas, but I chose sites on arterial state roads identified by the Planning and Zoning Sub-Committee on Affordable Housing as the best locations for affordable housing."

He referred to the town plan to build a new senior center on Edgerton Street. "It is the town that is now saying that affordable housing should be in the quiet residential neighborhood on Edgerton Street," he said.

He went on to reiterate that the town's efforts would not hinder his development plans. "Also, what the town does not understand is that they can play all the games they want, but even a moratorium cannot stop affordable housing from coming to Darien, since my developments are less than 40 units," he said.
